Question:
In a chloroplast the highest number of protons are found in
Options:
  • 1. lumen of thylakoids
  • 2. inter membrane space
  • 3. antenna complex
  • 4. Stroma
Solution:
(1) Proton concentration is higher in the lumen of thylakoid due to photolysis of water. H⁺ pumping and NADP reductase activity which occurs in stroma of the chloroplast. Non-cyclic photophosphorylation is performed by the collaboration of both the PSI and PSII. It is connected with the photolysis of water and liberation of oxygen occurs. The electron which was removed from PSII has to replace which is achieved by the electron availability due to the splitting of water. The water via, water splitting complex is associated with PSII, which itself is physically located on the inner side of the membrane of the thylakoids. Water splits into H⁺, oxygen and electrons the protons and oxygen are formed by splitting of water is released within the lumen of the thylakoids. The oxygen produced is released as one of the net products of photosynthesis.
