Question:
The process which makes a major difference between C₃ and C₄ plants is:
Options:
  • 1. glycolysis
  • 2. Calvin cycle
  • 3. photorespiration
  • 4. respiration
Solution:
Respiration that is initiated in chloroplasts and occurs in light only is called photorespiration. It is the process which makes a difference between the C₃ and C₄ plants. • Kranz anatomy, in which chloroplasts are present in bundle sheath cells is absent in C₃ plants while it is present in C₄ plants. • Photorespiration occurs in C₃ plants, during high temperature and low carbon dioxide concentration while it is absent in C₄ plants. • During photorespiration, there is a continuous loss of carbon. At high temperature and high O₂ content, RuBP carboxylase starts working as RuBP oxygenase and normal photosynthesis does not occur.
