Question:
Select the correct statement:
Options:
  • 1. Salvinia, Ginkgo and Pinus all are gymnosperms
  • 2. Sequoia is one of the tallest trees
  • 3. The leaves of gymnosperms are not well adapted to extremes of climate
  • 4. Gymnosperms are both homosporous and heterosporous
Solution:
Sequoia is a Gymnosperm and is one of the tallest tree species, known as redwood tree. The largest gymnosperm is Sequoia. • Salvinia is an angiosperm, but Ginkgo and Pinus are gymnosperms. • The leaves of gymnosperms are well-adapted to withstand extreme temperature, humidity and wind. In conifers, the needle-like leaves reduce the surface area. Their thick cuticle and sunken stomata also help to reduce water loss. The leaves of Ginkgo Biloba are fan-shaped. • Gymnosperms are heterosporous and produce smaller microspore and a larger microspore. The two kinds of spores are produced within the sporangia that are borne on sporophyll which are arranged spirally along the axis to form lax or compact strobili or cones.
