Current Question (ID: 12516)

Question:
Read the different components from I to IV in the list given below and tell the correct order of the components with reference to their arrangement from the outer side to the inner side in a woody dicot stem.
Options:
  • 1. III, IV, II, I
  • 2. I, II, IV, III
  • 3. IV, I, III, II
  • 4. IV, III, I, II
Solution:
The correct order is (outer side to inner side): Phellem or cork is a tissue formed on the outer side of phellogen or cork cambium. It is composed of dead cells and is protective in function. Secondary Xylem is a complex tissue which originates from vascular cambium. Cells displaced towards the inside of the vascular cambium differentiate as Xylem. Secondary Phloem It forms a narrow circle on the outer side of vascular cambium. Secondary phloem is made up of the type of cells as are found in the primary phloem i.e. sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem fibres and phloem parenchyma. Secondary Xylem forms the bulk of the stem and is commonly called wood. Phellem → Secondary cortex → Secondary phloem → Wood. This can be represented by the given figure.
