Question:
Carbon dioxide generated in the tissue is carried in venous blood primarily as
Options:
  • 1. Dissolved gas in plasma
  • 2. Carbamino hemoglobin
  • 3. Sodium bicarbonate in venous blood
  • 4. Potassium bicarbonate in venous blood
Solution:
When carbon dioxide enters the erythrocyte, it reacts with water and forms carbonic acid, which dissociates into hydrogen ion and bicarbonate ion. The bicarbonate ion moves out of the erythrocyte into the plasma in exchange for chloride ion, which is known as the chloride shift. The bicarbonate ion in the plasma gets carried to the lungs, where it re-enters the erythrocytes and forms carbon dioxide again. The process is reversed, and the carbon dioxide is expelled out of the lungs during exhalation. So, carbon dioxide generated in the tissue is carried in venous blood primarily as bicarbonate ion.
