Question:
Which of the following minerals reduces the excitability of nerves and muscles?
Options:
  • 1. Potassium
  • 2. Sodium
  • 3. Magnesium
  • 4. Manganese
Solution:
Decrease excitability means repolarization of the nerve. Potassium repolarises the nerves impulse after the depolarisation by the sodium ions, as Na⁺ ions concentration reach its peak in the depolarisation. Then the K⁺ channel open and efflux of K⁺ from the nerve cell and the diffusion, influx of Cl⁻ occurs. This lowers the potential of the nerve leading to repolarisation.
